ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Born in San Francisco in 1975, Justin Bower earned a degree in Art and Philosophy from the University of Arizona in 1998 and a Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University in 2010. Since graduating from CGU, Bower’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Ace Gallery Beverly Hills (2010) and Unix Gallery in New York City (2013 & 2015), as well as several group exhibitions. He has received several grants and awards for his art, making a significant impact on the art scene.
Justin Bower's paintings depict de-stabilized, fractured post-humans within intricate spatial systems. They challenge our self-definition in the digital age, highlighting the elusive nature of such a concept. Bower's work engages with the ongoing decoding of the human body and the questions it raises about our identity as coded beings, forever replicable. These paintings initiate a conversation about the unsettling impact of technology on individuals in contemporary society.
Bower's art reflects the growing sense of a "control society" and places turbulent subjects in an Op Art context, using repetitive patterns from the 60s to act as invading "code" within the body. He aims to evoke the instability his subjects represent, manipulating facial features and Op Art effects to awaken viewers from a technological slumber.
