THE CHRIST

48 x 36 = Japanise Sumi ink on canvas - framed original - signed

For the Obsidian Exhibit
By Alejandro Rojas Salazar
This series began in a place of lost faith—not lost as in gone, but buried. Ignored. Pushed aside in order to survive.

There was a time I couldn’t find comfort in Jesus Christ. The silence around my pain felt louder than any prayer. The rituals and promises of my Catholic upbringing—so vivid, so holy—felt distant. But even as I turned away, something sacred remained. In the grief, in the breaking, in the quiet—I still felt a presence. Not demanding. Not loud. Just… there.
These paintings are that presence. They are impressions of the Christ I grew up with—the Christ of churches, crucifixes, and whispered prayers—but seen through the lens of doubt, pain, and quiet return. They honor the Savior I was taught to love, while also revealing how that love changed form over time.

These works don’t preach. They don’t ask for belief. They simply witness. Quietly. Bruised. And still glowing in the dark.

That feeling I carry—of distance and return, of abandonment and unseen presence—is sacred. And I’ve channeled it the only way I know how: by painting it.
I chose black for its truth. Like obsidian, it cuts, reflects, and protects. These are not portraits of perfect faith. They are fragments of memory, reverence, and survival. The Christ of these works is both the one I knew in stained glass… and the one who sat beside me while I wept in silence.
This is not a rejection.
It is a reckoning.
A recognition.
A return.
